Overview

Wood & Trim Staining

Natural wood has a warmth and character that no synthetic material can replicate, and the Hamptons architectural tradition celebrates it — from exposed ceiling beams in a restored farmhouse to hand-milled mahogany staircases in an estate, from built-in bookshelves in a library to custom white oak doors throughout a new construction home. Proper staining enhances the inherent beauty of the grain, protects the wood from wear and environmental exposure, and brings cohesion to the interior design. At Level Up Painting, we treat wood staining as a craft unto itself, with the care and precision it deserves.

Every wood species accepts stain differently. Oak has prominent open grain that absorbs stain readily, producing dramatic figuring. Maple and birch are tight-grained and can blotch without proper pre-conditioning. Mahogany and cherry have natural warmth that deepens with the right finish. IPE and other tropical hardwoods require specialized penetrating oils rather than conventional stains. We understand these differences and select products and techniques that bring out the best in whatever species we are working with.

Custom color matching is one of our core capabilities. Whether you need to match new trim to existing woodwork, replicate a stain color from a designer specification, or blend a repair seamlessly into surrounding finished wood, we mix and test until the match is precise. We use professional-grade stains from Minwax, General Finishes, and Rubio Monocoat, among others, and finish with clear coats — oil-modified polyurethane for warmth and depth, waterborne polyurethane for clarity and low odor, or conversion varnish for maximum durability.

Our wood staining services cover every application in the home: interior doors and casings, baseboards and crown molding, exposed ceiling beams, staircases and railings, mantels and built-in cabinetry. We frequently coordinate staining with our interior painting and cabinet refinishing projects to ensure a unified aesthetic throughout the home, and work closely with architects and designers on new construction projects where wood finishes are specified from the outset.

Our Process

How We Deliver Wood & Trim Staining

A proven, step-by-step approach that ensures exceptional results on every project.

1

Wood Assessment & Color Selection

We identify the wood species, evaluate its condition, and work with you to select or custom-mix the ideal stain color and topcoat system.

2

Surface Preparation

Wood is sanded progressively through grits to achieve a smooth, even surface that accepts stain uniformly. Pre-conditioner is applied to blotch-prone species.

3

Stain Application

Stain is applied by hand using brush, rag, or wipe-on technique, ensuring even penetration and consistent color across every surface.

4

Clear Coat & Protection

Multiple coats of polyurethane, lacquer, or oil finish are applied and lightly sanded between coats to build a durable, smooth protective layer.

5

Final Inspection & Touch-Up

Every stained surface is inspected under task lighting for uniformity, drips, and missed areas. Touch-ups are performed before the final walkthrough.

FAQ

Wood & Trim Staining Questions

Answers to common questions from Hamptons homeowners.

Can you match a stain color to existing woodwork in my home?

Yes, custom color matching is one of our specialties. We create test samples on the same wood species and compare them to the existing finish in your home's lighting until the match is precise. This is especially important when adding new trim, doors, or built-ins to a room with established wood finishes.

What clear coat finish do you recommend for high-traffic areas?

For staircases, floors, and other high-traffic areas, we recommend oil-modified polyurethane or conversion varnish for maximum durability and scratch resistance. Waterborne polyurethane is an excellent choice for lower-traffic areas where low odor and fast dry time are priorities.

Can previously painted trim be converted back to a stained wood finish?

It depends on the condition of the wood underneath. If the paint can be fully stripped and the wood is in good condition with attractive grain, then yes — we can strip, sand, stain, and seal it. However, if the wood has been damaged or if the grain is unappealing, painting may be the better option. We can assess this during a consultation.

How do you handle staining exposed ceiling beams?

Exposed beams require careful prep and application from scaffolding or lifts, depending on ceiling height. We sand, clean, and apply stain by hand to ensure even coverage, then follow with a clear coat for protection. Drop cloths and plastic sheeting protect everything below, and we schedule beam work before floor finishing whenever possible.

How long does wood stain take to dry before applying a clear coat?

Most oil-based stains need 6 to 12 hours of drying time before a clear coat can be applied, while water-based stains dry in 2 to 4 hours. We never rush this step — proper drying ensures the clear coat bonds cleanly and the final finish is smooth and even.
