Wallpaper Installation & Removal
Wallpaper has experienced a remarkable resurgence in luxury interiors, and the Hamptons are at the forefront of this revival. From hand-woven grasscloth in a waterfront dining room to bold designer prints in a powder room to serene linen textures in a master suite, wallcoverings add a dimension of depth, pattern, and tactile richness that paint alone cannot achieve. At Level Up Painting, we bring the precision and expertise that these materials demand — because wallpaper is only as beautiful as its installation.
Working with high-end wallcoverings is fundamentally different from hanging standard vinyl or pre-pasted paper. Grasscloth and natural fibers — seagrass, jute, sisal, and raw silk — are delicate, unforgiving, and expensive. They cannot be repositioned once contact is made, adhesive must be applied to the wall rather than the material, and seams must be carefully managed to create the natural variation that makes grasscloth appealing rather than the misalignment that makes it look poorly installed. Our installers have years of experience with these materials and understand the nuances that separate competent work from exceptional results.
We work closely with interior designers and their clients throughout the Hamptons, handling materials from leading wallcovering houses including Phillip Jeffries, Thibaut, Schumacher, de Gournay, and Fromental. Whether the project involves a single accent wall or an entire home, we provide proper wall sizing and priming — an essential step that ensures clean future removal — precise pattern matching, and meticulous seam alignment. For mural-style wallcoverings and custom digital prints, we manage panel sequencing and layout planning to ensure the design reads correctly across the wall.
Wallpaper removal is equally important and equally demanding of skill. Improper removal — too much moisture, aggressive scraping, rushed work — can gouge drywall, delaminate plaster, and create hours of additional repair work. Our removal process uses controlled steam and scoring techniques that separate the wallcovering from the substrate cleanly, followed by thorough adhesive residue removal and surface prep to leave walls ready for fresh paint or new wallcovering.

Our Process
How We Deliver Wallpaper Installation & Removal
A proven, step-by-step approach that ensures exceptional results on every project.
Material Review & Wall Assessment
We review the wallcovering material, inspect the wall surface for imperfections, and determine the best sizing and adhesive system for the specific product.
Wall Preparation & Sizing
Walls are cleaned, repaired if needed, and coated with wallpaper primer/sizing — a critical step that ensures proper adhesion and clean future removal.
Layout Planning & Cutting
We plan seam placement, pattern alignment, and starting points to ensure the design flows naturally across each wall and around obstacles like windows and outlets.
Installation
Each panel is precisely cut, adhesive is applied (to wall or paper as the material requires), and the wallcovering is hung with exacting attention to seam alignment and air bubble elimination.
Trim & Final Inspection
Edges are trimmed cleanly at ceiling, baseboard, and window lines. Every seam, corner, and outlet opening is inspected for perfection before we consider the job complete.

FAQ
Wallpaper Installation & Removal Questions
Answers to common questions from Hamptons homeowners.
Can grasscloth wallpaper be installed in a bathroom?
While grasscloth can be installed in a powder room or half bath, we generally advise against it in full bathrooms with showers or tubs. The humidity and moisture will eventually damage natural fibers, causing warping, staining, and adhesive failure. For bathrooms, we recommend moisture-resistant vinyl wallcoverings that replicate the grasscloth texture without the vulnerability.
How long does wallpaper installation take for a typical room?
A standard room with four walls takes 1 to 2 days, depending on the complexity of the pattern, the material type, and the number of windows and doors. Grasscloth and natural fiber materials tend to take longer due to their delicate nature. Mural-style wallcoverings with sequential panel alignment may also require additional time.
Can old wallpaper be removed without damaging the wall?
In most cases, yes. Our removal process uses controlled steam application and careful scoring to separate the wallcovering from the wall without gouging the drywall or plaster. Walls that were properly sized before the original installation come cleanest. Even in difficult cases, we can restore the wall surface to a smooth, paint-ready condition.
Do you coordinate with interior designers on wallpaper projects?
Frequently. Many of our wallpaper projects come through interior designers, and we are comfortable working within their specifications, timelines, and aesthetic vision. We handle all material logistics, wall preparation, and installation so the designer can focus on the creative vision.
